Although I've done everything I could do to pay off my debt (work extra gigs ect), there are ALWAYS going to be expenses and keeping sane means preparing for your financial future. In my situation, I know for a fact that my father has no life insurance and I'm going to have to pay for everything when that unfortunate time comes. So, having a payment plan and a financial schedule under control is the best way to do everything.
I actually found that I had an extra month's rent last month and instead of splurging it on something fun like a vacation - I paid off my bills and now I'm closer to climbing out of debt. Using you money wisely and not splurging at all is very hard, but if you're cooking and entertaining at home, there is no reason to spend money outside for a while until you're financially comfortable.
Making the situation better would be to simply resist spending for some time. Whatever you absolutely don't need can wait. After all, Christmas was a little over a month ago and I'm sure a lot of people who paid for things with their credit cards are still paying things off - and then something else comes up like a party or an event that requires money. Choose a couple weeks out of the month where you won't spend anything at all other than bills and food and trying to catch up won't be so bad. Priorities will have to be made to really get ahead - and when you are ahead, save up so you're prepared for the next round :-)
